A Puffy Kind of Weekend with Zanzara

Well this weekend was one of learning, not particularly good things either.  Useful I guess, but not the fun kind.  Friday night I noticed that Riley had a mosquito bite just above his eye, and thought "poor guy, got bit by a nasty zanzara (mosquito)."  By Saturday morning when he woke up, his eye was very swollen.
We decided a trip to the hospital down in Pordenone was a good idea (but not too urgent), so loaded up the car and picked up pastries on the way.  We really weren't sure what to expect from an Italian ER, but were met by an interpreter (sent by the base) and had very little wait on the Pediatric floor.
The waiting area was actually pretty awesome!  They had this huge whale for the kiddos to climb on, as well as book shelves, riding toys, and fun colorful tables with chairs.  It was a good place to wait, and I was grateful for the entertainment for the boys.  They had fish decorations hung all around that we realized had been hand colored and cut.  So sweet that they took the time!
So we saw a female doctor that was dressed in white linen looking pants with a plain black shirt. I honestly didn't realize she WAS the doctor at first.  The visit was actually very casual, and not threatening!  They prescribed a cream, and said "if it gets any worse come back."

Well...when we woke up after naps, it was of course worse.  His eye was swollen completely shut.  I was a little freaked out, so back we went.  That's one hard thing about the translator.  I realized this time that the doctor was telling him much more than he was passing along.  They said it had gotten worse because of him sleeping on it, and it wasn't really a big deal.  Sure wish we would have clarified that the first go-around.

Our little guys were both good sports about all the driving, and Riley was in a surprisingly good mood all day.  It was nice to get our first (and second visits) out of the way without it being life threatening.  We learned how to get to the hospital, and that we need more bug spray!

Then we ended with food on the way home, because who wants to cook after a day of high blood pressure.

It couldn't end there...Sunday night Riley had another bite, right in the middle of his forehead.  Monday afternoon after he woke up from nap the swelling was again much worse.  Derek and I got off early to run over to the clinic on base, catch the last appointment, and find out nearly nothing.  He had a "large local reaction" I guess meaning that he is somewhat allergic to mosquitos.  And this morning when we woke the kids up to get ready for work...yep, you guessed it, swollen again.  This time one eye was completely shut, and the second somewhat swollen.  Poor guy could hardly see, so we took a day of snuggles!  I think it was needed by mommy as much as Riley.  Tomorrow is a new day, and I hopeful it will be worlds better since the cold packs and cucumber seemed to help a lot today.
